Start your trip in Denver, Colorado's lively capital city. After spending one night in Denver, travel south through the Arkansas and San Luis Valleys. Along the way, enjoy the views of the aspens on Kenosha Pass, visit the ghost town of St. Elmo, experience the Great Sand Dunes. Arriving in Taos, take in the views and culture of New Mexico's high desert. Spend three nights in Taos Ski Valley, up a narrow valley at the base of Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's tallest peak. From Taos, explore the Enchanted Circle, the Rio Grande Gorge, Bandelier, and the other sites of Northern New Mexico. Upon leaving Taos, follow the scenic High Road to Taos down to Santa Fe. In Santa Fe, spend some time exploring the streets of New Mexico's historic capital city - including the Plaza, Canyon Road, and the Palace of the Governors. Be sure to check out some of the numerous museums - including the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian - art galleries, and pottery shops. Don't miss the numerous recreation opportunities at the base of the Sangres. Spend two nights in the heart of Santa Fe. On Wednesday, visit Albuquerque for the annual Balloon Fiesta. After departing Santa Fe, travel back to Denver via Raton and Pueblo. Enjoy the dramatic views of the Rockies rising abruptly to the west and the plains stretching out, seemingly endlessly, to the east along the way. Back in Colorado, spend some time exploring Denver and the mountains before departing on Sunday.
